Testimonials

Rakesh is one of a small number of karate instructors who understands how the art is to be applied in actual combat. He is a highly skilled and knowledgeable martial artist who has studied his art in great depth. I highly recommend Rakesh to anyone wishing to add value to their art and who wants to understand the true application of traditional kata.

I've recently started Kata Combat Self-Defence with Rakesh Patel. I've learned so much in Rakeshs' classes. I have found them very rewarding, they are exactly what I was looking for. Rakesh is a brilliant teacher, he has a great way of getting the message across to me, which is a great skill to have.

I'm glad to have met Rakesh and train in his classes and would recommend him to anyone wishing to learn self-defence.

It has been my pleasure and good fortune to have known and trained alongside Rakesh for over 20 years. From the beginning Rakesh stood out for the sharpness and excellence of his techniques, as he progressed through the grades he was able to add great strength and power to his Karate without losing any technical excellence. This rare combination makes him uniquely qualified to teach both Kata Competence and Kata Combat.
He has an appetite for hard work unlike anyone I have known, combined with an insatiable thirst for knowledge and self improvement. I would highly recommend Rakesh to anyone seeking knowledge, inspiration and motivation in their martial arts training. He is a true gentleman both inside and outside the dojo and an inspiration to everyone that knows him.

In setting some new goals I would to recommend Rakesh Patel. Rakesh is my Karate instructor and once I became interested in expanding my knowledge he has encouraged me to do just that! I have been lucky enough to have taken part in his "Fit4Life" Self-Defence course and have one-to-one Kata Combat Self-Defence sessions with Rakesh. I am enjoying every aspect of Karate and the self-defence and feeling more confident in my ability to be more aware of any daner and if necessary defend myself and at the same time strengthening my not so bad right side punching and working on my less dominant (crappy) left side!

I look forward to continuing to work with Rakesh and setting and achieving my new goals!

You have been the best martial arts teacher that I've ever had. That is a lot to say considering that I trained in Judo with Otto Brito as a child, in Puerto Rico and then Tai Chi Chuan with Da Liu and Steve Ventura (karate) in New York as an adult. On top of that you trained me when I was the worst possible student, a fat old bloke. When I was training with you I was feeling like a tiger. Besides that you are one of the most honest and decent people I have ever met, and I tell everyone that. Your wife and son are very lucky indeed, and so was I to have met you and to train with you.

- Roger De Pedro (Puerto Rico)

Thank you - I'm so pleased I did the Fit4Life course. You're a great teacher! I feel like a new woman.

I consider myself very lucky over the last few years to have known Rakesh Patel and to have had access to his teaching in Shotokan Karate, Self Protection and Self Defence. Whether training in a formal karate class, or one on one personal training, Rakesh's instruction is excellent. I consider the one on one sessions we had over a two year period some of the best money I have ever spent on my martial arts training. If you want to learn how to hit hard, go book some sessions with Rakesh Patel.

Feedback on a previous applied Karate seminar:

I had the pleasure of hosting Rakesh Patel on September 9th 2012 and the theme was around Bassai Dai/Passai. From the outset, Kesh built a strong rapport with the group and continued building on it throughout with his standout passion for the subject, humour and exceptional technical knowledge across a broad range of 'styles'. I am very much looking forward to bringing Kesh back next year for another seminar and highly encourage other groups to do so.

On Sunday I had a fantastic 4 hours taking part in a seminar about the practical applications that can be found in the Bassai Dai kata. The seminar was lead by Rakesh Patel 5th Dan, a fellow Karateka who I’d met through Twitter. I’m fairly new to the world of martial arts seminars. Previously I’ve attended two seminars lead by Iain Abernethy, who I’ve mentioned on a number of occasions already in this blog and I’m sure needs little introduction, which I’d really enjoyed. I found Rakesh’s seminar equally enjoyable and informative, and I recommend attending one of his seminars if you ever have the opportunity.
