Kata Combat Training Day Retreat - 28th February 2015

This training day was a mix of diverse topics. The day started out with a short self-protection based ice-breaker to set the scene. Then it was onto the first of the six sessions. The ABC RED model was introduced and discussed in detail. It was great to hear how everyone could see the mode being useful in non physical self-defence and even better to hear everyone's questions and insights. Then it was onto the practical self-defence session. The room was set out in a circuit style format with various stations to perform the drills. Pad based striking, body shots to the crash mat, takedowns, fighting from the floor, knee strikes on the kick shields and more. A quick change in to training gis, stretch and onto the Kata Competence session began. The theme this time was 'mindset'. Rakesh talked the group through the importance of using a strong focused mindset in Kata to improve the overall physical performance - with various key principles in mind, everyone raised their standards there and then. Then there was a brief discussion on good nutrition and hydration. The last physical session was various the combat fitness pad based times rounds. The day concluded with a 10 minute guided meditation session to focus the mind. It was a long day, but we had some great laughs throughout.

Rakesh is very grateful for everyone's support and committment throughout the training day. Pictures to follow...

"I'd Just like to thank Rakesh Patel for a great day at the Training Retreat in Letchworth yesterday.
If you ever have the opportunity to go to one I highly recommend it. Looking forward to the next one!"

Cherylle Cooper

The next Training Day Retreat is already being planned for later on this year.

Self-Defence and Awareness Course for Pirton Youth Group - 27th February 2015

Rakesh was honoured to be asked to deliver a personal safety and defence course to a local youth group. Here's what the organisers had to say:

"We were really pleased with the turnout from the Pirton youngsters – we hadn’t expected so many so it was clear that a Self Defence evening was a good thing to have planned.

Thank you for running the evening for us – it was perfectly pitched for the age group involved and it was obvious that everyone enjoyed the session. As suggested we will follow up the ABC RED approach as an occasional reminder at future Youth Club meetings.

I think it would be a good idea to rerun the course again at some point in the future so no doubt we will be in touch again."

ABC RED

A is for Awareness: The foundation for effective defence of ourselves, our property, our loved ones and the property of our loved ones.

B is for Breathe: Recognition that potential action is required is vital in order to stay safe. Due to psychological stress, conscious breathing can help.

C is Create Space: Once a threat is faced, creating space is key to escaping and avoiding further danger.

R is for Respond: A response should ideally be simple and informed like talking down and avoiding threat of further danger. However, a physical response may be necessary as a last resort.

E is for Escape: The ultimate goal, should the gravity of the situation reach this stage, is to effectively escape to a safe environment.

D is for Debrief: It's important and often helpful, regardless of how insignificant it may seem, that we retrospectively reflect on the events. Not just how it ended but how it started in the first instance. Often simply describing the course of events with friends and family can we learn but also keep it firmly in the past.

Kata Bunkai Seminar with Rakesh Patel and Andi Kidd - 15th November 2014

Rakesh and Andi ran their first joint Bunkai seminar in Welwyn Garden City, Herts. Martial artists from all over the UK came to train together for a Bunkai extravaganza.

The theme was the application of kata to support core combative principles. They both focused on taking existing primary strikes and enhancing them with motions & techniques found in kata/forms; Enpi/Wanshu, Bassai/Passai, Sepai, Nijushiho/Niseishi, Heian Shodan/Pinan Nidan, Jitte/Sip Soo to name a few. The application for the first movement of Enpi/Wanshu proved to be popular.

The last session of the course was to pressure test everything learned and practiced so far. Andi guided the group through various drills that were downright chaotic, erratic and fun! Everyone's admirable enthusiasm to 'get stuck in' made for a fantastic course.

Next year's event has already been scheduled for Saturday 3rd October!

Kata Combat Training Day - 5th October 2013

This was the first time that 4 separate Kata Combat/Competence sessions were taught in one day. It was a great day supported by some fantastic martial artists!

Kata Competence: This session was dedicated to improving Kata Competence in solo performance. Various key topics, concepts and tips were explained and drilled through repetition and demonstration.

Self-Protection: Focusing on the non-physical aspects of Kata Combat. We highlighted just how important both avoidance and awareness were through real life experiences. We then moved on learn just how important others actions are, and how they can affect ourselves. We practiced the importance of positioning when facing varying degrees of threats.

Self-Defence: The key message here was that intent trumps technique when dealing with physical attack. We practiced, from various positions just how important it was to have a primary strike that we can execute under pressure (in groups of four: 3 on 1) with high intent - to facilitate an effective escape.

Kata Combat Fitness: Jab, Cross and the Lead Hook along with bobbing and covering were all drilled in various combinations in timed rounds.

Following very positive feedback, another Training Day is being organised for early next year. More details announced in the Newsletters and Events page.
