Manji Uke in KataPublished 23/02/2013
I've been teaching some applications to Kanku-Sho kata and in particular the sequence of Manji Uke (Angular Block). In my demonstration I set the scene by referencing Jion kata explaining that its Manji Uke sequences captures similar principles. Then last week in a private session, I was asked to cover Jion and when it came to the Manji Uke(s), I covered the Kanku-Sho principles too. As we worked through the various sequences and the combative principles within, it made sense to then look at how other kata exhibit Manji Uke. We looked at Jion, Kanku-Sho and Gankaku (Chinto).

This mini study will form the basis of a afull article, but the key points made were:

 - As many as 10 Shotokan Kata features Manju Uke/Gamae
 - One or more follow up techniques feature in the vast majority of those Kata
 - The follow ups address various instinctive opponent reactions to having received Manji Uke
 - The Manji Uke in these cases is a position of transition and not a 'finisher'.

The article is underway and will be posted in the download section soon.
